1. On the dooprekord of his son Nicolaas Jacobus Smit (*1871), one of the witnesses is Nicolaas Jacobus Smit, (maybe an older brother).
2. The death notice of the mother of this Nicolaas Jacobus Smit indicates that he indeed had a brother by the name of Willem Jacobus.

Willem married Hester Elizabeth VAN STADEN, daughter of Jacobus Frederik VAN STADEN and Johanna Catharina VAN STADEN, on 3 Nov 1852 in Potchefstroom. (Hester Elizabeth VAN STADEN was born on 23 Jul 1834, christened on 24 Dec 1836 in Uitenhage, South Africa, died on 15 Oct 1920 and was buried in Edenville, South Africa.)
